Generic Drugs vs. Brand Name Drugs

Name brand medication or generic brand? This is a question that we may find ourselves asking from time to time. Which is cheaper? Which is more effective? Basically, which is better? Well, hopefully, this article will help clarify any bit of confusion and enlighten you as to which would best benefit you.

So, you really want to know which is better? How about if I say both are safe and effective? Would you believe me? Well, it’s true. Generic drugs are just as effective and safe as the brand name drugs. According to the FDA, generic drugs cannot be sold as such unless they meet the governmental standards.

What makes a difference is the fact that when major pharmaceutical companies bring a new prescription drug on to the market, they have to pay for its development and for its promotion and whatever else. Next, the company goes about getting a patent for the newly developed drug which then gives them the sole right to develop and produce the medication. However, there comes a point where the patent expires and other, smaller, generic brand manufacturers can produce the drug themselves under a different name and once this happens, this drives the price down for essentially the same product.

What matters here is the fact that the smaller manufacturers don’t need to spend millions of dollars developing and promoting anything, since the pharmaceutical corporations already did that for them. Virtually, the only chemical difference between a generic drug and a brand name drug is its composition of inactive ingredients. Due to trademark laws, the exact recipe of a brand name drug cannot be replicated even once the patent has expired, so the inactive ingredients are altered a bit so as to accomodate. And although the appearance of of the generic drug may differ from the original brand name drug, this too does not mean the efficacy has been compromised somehow.

Lastly, it also needs to be noted that there is no noticeable difference in the speed at which the drug works and its potency. Both brand name and generic brand drugs are required to work just as quickly as the other. On a sidenote, the FDA has figured that almost half of all generic drug productions come from large pharmaceutical companies.

In conclusion, it should seem apparent that there is no longer any reason to opt for the brand name due to some preconceived misconceptions about the efficacy of cheaper generic drugs. The only reason to buy brand name drugs is if there currently isn’t an identical generic product yet on the market. So, remember, more expensive doesn’t always necessarily mean for a better product.

Individual who require inexpensive health options commonly opt to use generic medicines. Generic medicines have the identical active components and side effects as their brand name substitute. Generics and branded medicines are identical in their healthiness, purpose, strength, and processing means. By the same, it may mean the drugs have the same active ingredients or employ a bioequivalent composition of the brand-name version. They’re regarded as bioequivalent if their rate and availability after being administered in an identical quantity have alike effects. Having alike effects, both medicine types have the same effects and level of safety.

If brand-name and generic medicines are so similar, why is the last more inexpensive than the first? The expensive price of brand-name drugs come from their research, process, and marketing. Since the brand name drug is newly made, a patent is given to grant them exclusive privileges in profiting from the medicine. When these branded drugs are nearing their copyright ending, fellow companies go to to the Food and Drug Administration to permit them to manufacture the generics.

Generic drug producers do not have a patent, thus the logic for their lesser cost. Other generic drugs can have a patent for the composition but not for the active composition. Since the generic manufacturers only have to go to the FDA and have no preliminary R&D costs, they can offer the drug at a inexpensive price. Finances also play a function in the generic drug’s cheaper cost. Because more manufacturers can produce a generic counterpart, there is higher competition in the market. For one company to have an advantage over the other, they must sell the medicine at a much lower cost. With more consumers, they can opt to have sales at a lowered price.

Since generic drugs acquire their inexpensive prices from economic aspects, it’s evident that a drug’s value doesn’t establish its efficacy. Certain individuals are under the wrong assumption that generics have a smaller price because they’re not as efficient. Prior to reaching such a conclusion, you needs to investigate and evaluate the financing logic for it. The Food and Drug Administration makes certain that generic producers follow their standards. These standards apply to branded and generic medicine manufacturers. Anyone with this cost misconception should also know that 50 percent of the generics manufactured are made by brand-name produced.

Don’t be alarmed if the generic equivalent applies a distinctive mix of inactive chemicals. The differences also stem from a copyright concern US trademark laws state that generic drugs cannot look identical as the branded counterpart. However, the generic will continue to employ the identical active components process and combination to cause the same efficacy and outcomes.

The inexpensive values of generic drugs allow one to set aside more on other relevant costs. You will not have to fret about your kid’s well-being by giving them generic medicine. At the same time, you can still save on their education finances and have more to spend for the family’s living costs. When your doctor advises a medicine for your condition, be sure to ask them for a generic alternative.

The moment you use the word ‘generic’ in the presence of someone employed by Big Pharma, there are reactions comparable to asking about contraceptives when visiting the Vatican. The reason is simple. The generic manufacturers are allowed to compete with the companies that went through the research and development phase after the patents have expired. All these ‘dangerous’ companies need to do is to wait a few years and then copy all the original research. That means the product is bioequivalent and, under normal circumstances, the regulatory authorities in each country routinely licence the import of the copied drugs which are sold at a big discount. This affects the profits of Big Pharma. So, equally routinely, the lobbyists employed by Big Pharma discuss generic imports with their regulatory authorities, and sometimes those discussions lead to action. First, a word of reassurance. The action I am about to discuss does not affect your ability to buy generic viagra online. Although some thirty drugs are affected, they are treatments for rather different conditions.

The FDA has issued two Warning Letters to Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of generic drugs based in India. These letters assert that Ranbaxy has not maintained proper manufacturing standards in two of its plants. Following the warnings, there is also an Import Alert that allows US customs officials to detain the finished drugs as they enter the US. These Warning Letters are somewhat controversial. There is no suggestion that the thirty drugs named on the list and manufactured in the identified plants are unsafe. There is no product recall and no warning to patients not to continue taking the drugs they already hold. Further, there is no suggestion that the other plants where different drugs are produced are unsafe in any way. This is, at best, a technical violation by the manufacturer. But the effect on Ranbaxy’s reputation has been quite chilling and its share price has fallen. To repeat, this does not affect the generic Viagra manufactured by Ranbaxy.

The politics of free trade are always complicated. When the interests of significant local industrial players are involved, there is always going to be a temptation to be protectionist. In this instance, the decision of the FDA looks suspect because it has not required a recall. By its own admission, there is nothing wrong with the generic drugs manufactured by Ranbaxy. They can be safely consumed by existing patients. But the FDA is nevertheless authorising customs to stop imports of new supplies. I suspect that if the FDA had tried to interfere with the import of generic viagra, there would have been am outcry. As it is, there has been little comment outside the financial press discussing the effect on share price.

Why we choose generic medication? The answer come in two words. The generic are "Safe" and "Affordable". These two words have important meaning of why we better use the generic than the brand version. I will explain each of the definition of those two words.

The first one is "Safe", what this is mean? It means generic drug has the same ingredient with its branded drug, It has the same active ingredient, usually this active ingredient became the generic name. But then come another question, why the look, colour, and flavor from this generic medicine are different with their brand competitor? This is what we called as inactive ingredients that used as the differences between generic medicine and branded medicine, this thing is needed because according to the US law the generic drug can’t copy exactly the branded version. For your information, this inactive ingredient don’t have any side effect for your health. If one of generic drug has the same active ingredient with that branded one, so you have the same drug effect. The point is the generic medications is as safe as their branded counterparts.

The second word is "Affordable", this indicate that generic drugs are sold at lower price, much..much.. lower than its brand version. Why this could be ? According to the previous paragraph, generic medications have the same active ingredient with its branded counterpart. If they have the same ingredient the pharmacy should sell it at the same price isn’t it? Or maybe the difference is not too far between them. Well, the answer is because the branded version is always the innovator. The pharmaceutical company make lot of research and development to find this type of drug. This research and development activity spent much money and time. So when the drug is made they mark up the price as huge as possible in addition to cover up all their past their R&D costs.

Some of popular prescriptions such as fosamax, metformin, norvasc, zocor, diovan, nexium, plavix, singulair, flomax, synthroid, and celebrex have their own generic version too.

We have heard about the term drugs and are very well aware of the purpose it is used for. But what does the term Generic Drug mean? Does it have the same effect as the branded drug available at the local pharmacist? If you have these questions in mind, your questions will be answered before you complete reading this article.

Definitions

A Branded Drug has a trade name and is drug manufactured by a well established pharmaceutical company, protected by a patent. It cannot be produced or sold by any other company. A brand name will be more simpler than the generic name.

Generic Drugs can be defined as a substitute or a bioequivalent of a branded drug satisfying the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic standards. A generic name is the actual chemical name of the drug with respect to the chemical ingredients present within the drug.

A drug can be called generic only if it has the same chemical ingredients at same strength, safety precautions and most importantly it has to meet the same pharmacopoeial standard of preparation. If you are taking generic drugs, they are suppose to be taken in the same manner as the branded drug i.e. similar dosage, similar time duration, similar strength and similar instructions. Although instructions about taking a particular is always mentioned on the packet cover.

Why do we have different names and what purpose does it solve? Let’s find out the reasons behind this naming convention with an example of a shoe manufacturing company. We all wear shoes everyday and the purpose of wearing shoes is simple to protect your feet. A shoe from a branded company (an expensive pair of shoes) will do the same job for you as would a normal cheaper brand of shoe will. But not everyone can afford expensive shoes for their day to day use, so they settle down for a normal black leather shoe. similarly, there are two kinds of drugs, a branded one and a generic one both have the same chemical composition and safety precaution but differ in price for the various research, manufacturing and marketing cost incurred on the brand name company. One more reason for this naming convention is that generic names are long and difficult to remember or pronounce. But brand names given by the manufacturing companies are catchy, single word names which are easy to remember.

Important Information

Generic drug of a particular drug cannot be produced if the patent associated with it is still active. If someone manufactures a generic drug ignoring the patent the brand company can file a lawsuit against the generic company.

Drug is defined, in broad and very non-specific terms as any substance that is taken into the body, through any means, intended to alter the body functions and processes. Drugs may be used as cures for certain medical conditions, or they may also be used purely for recreational purposes. In pharmacology, Dictionary.com defines a drug as "a chemical substance used in the treatment, cure, prevention, or diagnosis of disease or used to otherwise enhance physical or mental well-being." Drugs may be prescribed for a limited duration, or on a regular basis for chronic disorders. Medicine is just an alternative name for drug.

When a drug is first discovered, it is given a chemical name according to its chemical composition and International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry rules. Since chemical names are usually very long and complicated, its not feasible for pharmacists and researchers to use those names. The complexity of chemical name makes it impractical to remember every drug name. A shorthand version of drug name is thus devised, or a code is given to the chemical name until it is presented to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and approved. FDA then decides a formal name for that drug, known as Generic Drug Name. Trade names are the names chosen by the manufacturing company and are usually easier to remember.

Government officials, researchers, doctors, and others who write about the new compounds use the drug’s generic name because it refers to the drug itself, not to a particular company’s brand of the drug or a specific product. However, doctors often use the trade name on prescriptions, because it is easier to remember and doctors usually learn about new medicine by the trade name. Generic drug names are usually harder to remember as compared to trade names. Generic names are generally shorthand versions of the actual chemical formula of drug. It may even be just a part of the chemical name. Trade names, on the other hand, are catchy and easy to understand. They may refer to the chemical composition or the desired outcome.

The term generic, is generally assumed to be a low-quality version of a trade or brand name product. This applies to major household and food items, but medicine is devoid of it. Generic medicines are just as effective as brand name medicines. In fact, generic drug makers manufacture many trade-name products for companies that control the trade names. Sometimes, more than one generic version of a drug is available. For example, many manufacturers sell versions of Acetaminophen.

This name is approved by FDA and used by doctors, researchers and pharmacists internationally. When a drug is discovered or prepared, the manufacturer has to get approval from FDA before they start selling the product in pharmacies. They also have to patent a name associated with the drug as an internationally recognized name. This name, the Generic drug name is usually a shorthand version of chemical name of the drug.

Amphetamines are a group of drugs, falling under the category of Psycho Stimulants, which are used to cause alertness and wakefulness with suppressed appetite and fatigue. Amphetamines are generally used in the treatment of a condition known as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or simply as ADHD. They may also be used in the treatment of Narcolepsy.

Amphetamine stimulates the brain and also can increase blood pressure. It has been proven to be more effective and hence preferable over methylphenidate, or Ritalin. Amphetamine is available at pharmacies and drug stores with the generic name of Adderall. Some other variations may also be available, such as Adderall AX which is chemically essentially dextroamphetamine.

Adderall or Amphetamine is not available without prescription and is not a generic over-the-counter pill. It is widely used as a recreational drug too. Adderall is usually taken once or twice a day as the physician suggests achieving desired results. ADHD patients generally have a short attention span, so people going to school or other educational institutions are generally advised to take one (or more) before the day starts so they can stay alert during the classes and their daily routine.

Drug suppliers which are producing Amphetamine-Dextroamphetamine are Barr Laboratories Inc, Eon Labs Manufacturing Inc, Mallinckrodt Medical Inc, Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals, United Research Laboratories/Mutual Pharmaceutical Company etc.

There are three main types of names for drugs. The Chemical Name is the actual IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) approved chemical name of the drug. Chemical names are usually very technical and complicated. The Generic Name is approved by FDA and used by doctors, researchers and pharmacists internationally. When a drug is discovered or prepared, the manufacturer has to get approval from FDA before they start selling the product in pharmacies. They also have to patent a name associated with the drug as an internationally recognized name. This name, the Generic drug name is usually a shorthand version of chemical name of the drug.

The Trade Name is devised by the manufacturer to sell the drug commercially is known as trade names. These are usually very non-technical, easy to remember and often associated with the desired output of the drug rather than its physical and/or chemical composition. A drug may be known in the masses by its trade name rather than its generic name.

So a drug typically has only one single chemical and generic name but it very well can have more than one trade name, depending on type and number of companies manufacturing it. Trade names, in specific vary manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, the drug with generic name Paracetamol is available worldwide in all sorts of names: Paralen, Phenaphen, Plicet, Redutemp, Feverall, Few Drops, Fibi, Fibi plus, Panadol etc. just to name a few. All of these are trade names and are locally known by these or other trade names, but pharmacists and doctors all see these names as Paracetamol. So generic names are important for doctors etc. to know whatever the trade name is, generic name always indicates the actual nature of the drug.

There are three main types of names for drugs:
a. The Chemical Name: This is the actual IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) approved chemical name of the drug devised according to its chemical composition, structure of molecules, and/or molecular arrangement. Chemical names are usually very technical and complicated. They are not easy to remember and due to complexity of structure, researchers, doctors, teachers etc. prefer generic names over chemical names.

b. The Generic Name: This name is approved by FDA and used by doctors, researchers and pharmacists internationally. When a drug is discovered or prepared, the manufacturer has to get approval from FDA before they start selling the product in pharmacies. They also have to patent a name associated with the drug as an internationally recognized name. This name, the Generic drug name is usually a shorthand version of chemical name of the drug.

c. The Trade Name: The name devised by the manufacturer to sell the drug commercially is known as trade names.

Usually the drugs that depress or inhibit dopamine receptors cause a lot of problems for parkinson patients.

Canadian Pharmacy Online
The cost of prescription drugs to different parts of the world have increased rapidly leaving many uninsured and underinsured without reasonably related medications is necessary. … Heavy discounts given the brand name and generic prescriptions. Canadian drugs are of the same quality, strength and purity, by the United States’ drug that many Americans are now placing their orders online Canadian drugstore.

Are generic drugs equal to brand name products?
I find this interesting given that my 11 year old son takes multiple seizure medicaitons all in the generic form. Recently, we were dispensed a different generic form of one and since then, he has been extremely sedated and drooling like a … I tried the generic form with very poor results. With my insurance, the cost for the name brand medication is actually cheaper than the generic.
